Bridal Workshop

I had time to get in one more wedding workshop so on Monday I spent the day learning from the talented Denver photographer Travis Broxton.  Travis has been photographing weddings for many years and shared so much knowledge plus he had a great personality so listening to him was fun.  We spent the morning in class and then the afternoon photographing some beautiful brides.  I find myself observing a lot during these photo sessions, I love watching other photographers work and when the instructor isn’t ‘teaching’ but just photographing along with us I find some great tips that I can bring back for my brides.  I also try to take advantage of these bridal photo sessions by challenging myself.   I get overwhelmed when there are lots of other photographers shooting so I try to step back and find creative perspectives, plus I only use one lens for the entire seession  Usually I’ll pick a new lens – but I don’t have a new lens so I pulled out my Nikon 85mm which I typically only use for portraits.

Here are a couple of images from the day.

I took the second photo through a window – the patio was a full of other photographers from the class so I got creative and found this angle.  The window reflections added a little interest to the image.

Another interesting angle for a basic bridal photo.  I thought the reflections in the water were fun.  I saw another photographer at WPPI using water to get interesting reflections so I’ve had my eyes open for his opportunity since then.

Folsom Field Bridals

I love to incorporate things and places that are special to my brides into their images.  It makes the images more personal and unique.  Last summer I took Anna to Folsom Field for her bridal portraits because that is where she and Justin met.  I had to wait until after her wedding to post the images so Justin wouldn’t stumble upon them.  My favorites are below.  The Stadium Club at Folsom Field is a really beautiful place to host your wedding.  Views of the Flat Irons, great food and the stadium is fun to get creative with your images too.

Trash the Dress Boulder

I’ve said it before portrait sessions are all about being you and having fun – and this trash the dress session was very individual. Meet Becky. I met Becky at the Innovative Image Makers camera roadtrip. I was drawn to her because she was so much fun and willing to try any crazy pose. I think the collection below tells you a lot about Becky. She’s fun and daring and very much Becky. You were a blast to work with and I enjoyed spending the afternoon in Boulder with you.

A Trash the Dress photo session is about celebrating your wedding after the stress of the day is gone. You get to wear your dress again and relax and have fun. The result is some fun images that highlight who you are. The water fountain is optional.

Boulder RoadTrip

I totally believe in education and networking. When Innovative Image Makers invited me to their camera roadtrip that combines education and networking I signed up. The roadtrip is a chance to meet other photographers and to experiment and have fun taking pictures. The models are regular people that donate their time. A few of my favorite images are below. Thank you for organizing this.

Trash the Dress

I’ve been getting questions from my friends and family about how I ‘altered’ the image on the main page to make it look like the couple is in the water. Well, that isn’t altered – they are in the water. Yes, my friends and family are old married people that aren’t up on the cutting edge trends in wedding photography like the brides reading this but these images are from my first ‘Trash the Dress” session. The session was organized by Andrew Schaefer and included some other incredibly talented photographers.

I must admit, I’m not fond of the “Trash the Dress” trend. Maybe it’s just the name – why would you want to trash your wedding dress? Perhaps, instead of trashing think of it as a relaxing in your dress session. Hmm, I like that. The stressful wedding is done and now we can wear the dress again and concentrate on being beautiful and getting some great images and not ruining the dress… Besides, a good dry cleaner could fix some little stains and water dries. Still, there is no reason to trash the dress.  We can get some awesome shots with only a little dirt and wrinkles. But if you want to jump in the water I’ll be there with my camera :) Here are the photos.
